Program Overview:
Students will have an opportunity to become “real” field science researchers, using the ongoing wolf-moose study on Isle Royale National Park as a model. Hopefully the students will have had a chance to visit the website www.isleroyalewolf.org which gives current updates from the researchers on Isle Royale(IR). The scientists describe what they are seeing and what it is like to be a scientist on a remote wilderness island in the winter. Our program will begin indoors with an overview of the wolf-moose project with a special emphasis on animal systems, adaptations, and genetic traits vs. learned behaviors. Students will then be divided into groups and rotate through three stations. The outdoor station(approx. 40 minutes) will attempt to replicate what the IR scientists do on a daily basis-conducting a census of wolves and moose. Students will be traveling around the property searching for animal evidence and painted stakes that represent moose, wolves, or moose kill sites. A count will be kept and locations will be recorded on a map. The indoor stations(approx. 20 min. each) will give students an opportunity to practice their scientific process skills. They will investigate “simulated” nature scenes that require them to identify tracks and other “signs”(using track keys, rulers, etc) to explain what has occurred. The last station will consist of a skull collection that students will closely observe to answer questions about physical features, adaptations, and genetic relationships. A brief wrap-up will review the data collected outside.
